Marshalls stores' giant, El Paso distribution center open, eventually to have 1,150 jobs
The Marshalls clothing stores' giant distribution center and warehouse in East El Paso is open and already employs 500 people.
It opened in January and is expected to be fully operational later this year, Andrew Mastrangelo, a spokesman for TJX Cos., said in an email.
Besides Marshalls, the Massachusetts company also operates the T.J. Maxx, HomeGoods and Sierra retail chains. The stores sell clothing, home goods and other products with national brand names at discounted prices.
The El Paso facility eventually will employ 1,000 general warehouse workers and 150 management personnel, Mastrangelo said.
Hiring is "a continuous process based on the current needs of the business," he said.
The 2-million-square-foot facility, at 3900 Global Reach Drive, is spread over about a half-mile on 200 acres of El Paso airport-owned land between George Perry Boulevard and the Butterfield Trail Golf Club. The giant William Beaumont Army Medical Center looms in the background.
It's one of the largest industrial buildings in El Paso.
Amazon's El Paso distribution center, opened in late 2021 in far East El Paso County, has 2.6 million square feet spread over five floors and employs about 2,000 people. However, its footprint of 625,000 square feet takes up less ground than Marshalls' one-floor facility.
T.J. Maxx officials did not permit the El Paso Times to tour or take photos inside the new facility. Mastrangelo wouldn't answer many questions about the facility because, he said, "we are a very quiet company, and generally don't discuss our business or real estate publicly."
TJX is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange, so most information about it is disclosed through financial reports filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Its stock closed at just over $78 per share Wednesday.
The El Paso facility will supply a portion of more than 1,180 Marshalls stores in the United States. It has four stores in El Paso and one in Las Cruces, according to the Marshalls' website, which takes online orders.
TJX has 38 owned and leased distribution centers, including 17 for its Marmaxx division, which includes Marshalls T.J. Maxx and Sierra stores, its latest annual report shows.

The Marmaxx division had sales of $30.5 billion in fiscal year 2023, ending Jan. 28, a 4% increase from the prior year. Its three online e-commerce sites, including marshalls.com, accounted for less than 3% of those sales.
TJX had almost $50 billion in worldwide sales and a profit of $3.5 billion in fiscal year 2023.
The El Paso distribution center had a price tag of $150 million when officials with the city and the Borderplex Alliance, the El Paso regional economic development organization, announced TJX's plans in October 2020.
The El Paso City Council approved an economic development agreement with the company to provide it almost $9 million in tax rebates and other incentives over 15 years if requirements are met for the distribution center.

The company isn't divulging starting wage for jobs at the El Paso facility, but it's more than the $12.50 per hour required for the bulk of the workforce under the city agreement, Mastrangelo has said. The management jobs required an average wage of at least $32 under the city agreement.
A recent job posting on the TJX website had a warehouse associate starting wage at $16.50 per hour in Fort Worth.
People can search for jobs at the El Paso distribution center through the TJX job site (jobs.tjx.com), and apply for posted jobs online, or in person at the Global Reach facility weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Mastrangelo said. Applications are only accepted for posted jobs, and on Wednesday the facility had none.
Job postings change frequently, so job searchers should check the TJX website frequently, Mastrangelo suggested.
