Marshfield Class of 2023 celebrates commencement

MARSHFIELD − The 300 members of Marshfield's Class of 2023 celebrated at a commencement ceremony at the school's football stadium Saturday. Dressed in green and white robes, the graduates filed onto the playing field as the high school band played "Pomp and Circumstance."

Senior Spencer Powell's performance of the national anthem on electric guitar drew loud cheers and recalled Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock in 1969.

Class President Joseph Mamet prefaced his speech by noting it was "the first assignment I could not ask for an extension on." Mamet said "the most important thing we learned was accountability − accountability for our time, accountability for our actions."

In his parting words, he urged his classmates to continue to hold themselves accountable and congratulated them on their achievements. "You earned it!" he said.

As rain and wind gusts strengthened, several hundred spectators moved inside to watch the television broadcast of the ceremony in the auditorium. The wind knocked out the audio system for a while, which prompted officials to bypass several speeches and proceed directly to the presentation of diplomas.

After the graduates had their names called, the scheduled speakers delivered their speeches from the stadium's press box atop the bleachers.

Class valedictorian Sadie Elwood, reflecting on the ups and down of her high school life, recalled when her nose was broken during a loss in the first round of the high school basketball tournament. Elwood said that although she was first in her class, her four years weren't "defined by academics, but by friendships."

"I couldn't have done it without you," Elwood said. "You have challenged me, inspired me and made me what I am today. Thank you all. I had the time of my life."
