Marshwood High School field hockey wins Class A Sportsmanship Award

OAKLAND, Maine – The Marshwood High School field hockey team was the eighth seed and was ousted in this year’s Class A preliminary round.

However, that didn’t stop the Hawks from being featured last Saturday in the Class A championship game at Messalonskee High School.

Marshwood head coach Kristen Amato and eight members of her team were on hand to receive the Class A Sportsmanship Award, which is voted on by league officials and opposing coaches.

“It was a really nice way to end the season, and to be recognized for something that we value in our program,” said Amato, who completed her fifth season as head coach at her alma mater. “Sportsmanship, character building, empowerment for female athletes and all of that is what we talked about it a lot during the season and how our actions mean a lot. It was nice to be recognized. The woman in charge told me it was an overwhelming vote for us.”

Amato was joined on the field last Saturday by players Maddie LaBreck, Grace Brackett, Claudia Hohn, Brooke Salvail, Reece Forrester, Erika Parker, Shannen Maldonis, and Lainey Doran.

“It was so fun to be there,” Amato said. “It was a really good experience to be up there at the game, and to be able to walk on the field to receive the award was just a nice culmination for a season where these girls really work hard.”

Other members on Marshwood this season included Elle McDaniel, Chloe Walker, Ella Holland, Katie Breton, Eva Hersey, Olivia Minotti and Lily Dupree.

The Hawks, who last won this award in 2012, went 6-8-1 this season. Amato said she was, and was not, surprised the Hawks won this award,

“Yes, I was surprised because you don't go into things thinking that you'll be recognized for something like this,” Amato said. “Yet, on the same page, I wasn’t (surprised) because I also know how my athletes were very sportsman-like this year. I have a great bunch of leaders, a great bunch of seniors; just a kind, very classy kind bunch. It was nice for other people to see that as well.”
