Line Of Duty’s Martin Compston has teased that the upcoming season finale could be the last ever episode of the hit show.

The current series of the BBC crime drama wraps up on Sunday, and Compston admitted he doesn’t know yet if the show will be back for another run.

However, speaking on the Shrine Of Duty podcast, he promised that fans who are desperate to learn the identity of the mysterious ‘H’ will get “a lot of payoffs” this week.

“Jed [Mercurio, the show's creator] always takes time after a series, he always takes a couple of months.

“There is a lot of stuff that’s way beyond my pay grade — the data, the figures, the analytics, audience scores, all that. I think he likes to take the emotion out of it and sit down and look at all that.”

Compston said usually they have to look at whether people want them back.

“You don’t want to overdo it,” he said.

“But also when we get 10 years in you start to think of legacy, and if it goes down that well in some ways it might be the perfect ending.

“But then again we might get to a couple of months and... what I would say is we won't do one just for the sake of doing it. That won’t happen.

"Jed will only do it if he feels there's a story to be told.”

Line Of Duty – which also stars Adrian Dunbar and Vicky McClure – started in 2012 and is on its sixth series.
