Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrated in Beaver County events

The Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday on Monday will be celebrated locally with in-person and online events.

At Geneva College in Beaver Falls, the 11th annual MLK Night of the Arts event on Jan. 16 will feature the jazz group Mixtape (formerly known as the Terry Levels Jazz Band) performing at Skye Lounge on the college's Beaver Falls campus. Artwork contributed by the Genesis Collective will be displayed, with other musical performances and oral presentations rounding out the 7 p.m. celebration.

Featured artists will include Joi Waller, Marlon Gist, Angela Brown and Denise Johnson.

Each year, the Center for Student Engagement at Geneva hosts the Dr. King Night of the Arts event, celebrating the life and legacy of King through various artistic expressions. More details are at geneva.edu.

The Midland Women’s Civic Club, teamed with the Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center, will commemorate the holiday with online programming centered on the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington, one of the most significant events in American civil rights history.

The presentation will feature dialogue with Rutha Mae Harris, an original Freedom Singer, and area residents who marched with King that day. The moderator is Todd Allen, Beaver Falls native and prominent Messiah University vicepresident for diversity affairs and professor of communication.

The signature underwriter of the event is Lincoln Learning Solutions. Key sponsors include the Midland School District, the Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School, Baden Academy Charter School, Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School, Midland Innovation + Technology Charter School, and Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center,which is producing the event.

The Midland Women’s Civic Club, which raises money for college-bound students, hopes the public will take part in the presentation "to be immersed in song, video, Dr. King’s brilliant message, and the thoughts and memories of the people who were there with him in 1963, as we again make MLK Day a 'day on' of fellowship and enlightenment to benefit local students through scholarships," a press release said.
