A Martinez church is asking planning officials to construct an addition that would more than double the church’s square-footage.

Faith Outreach Church and its facilities manager, Marcelino Sanchez, have applied to the county for a zoning exception that would allow the church’s west Augusta campus at 102 S. Belair Rd. to construct a two-story building adjacent to the church.

The church currently occupies an entire 9,400-square-foot former commercial strip that the church had used for several years before buying the property in 2017. The church started in Hephzibah in 1995, using Willis Foreman Elementary School as a meeting place before moving to its own space on Willis Foreman Road in 1997.

Faith Outreach wants to build its 10,000-square-foot addition near a small detention pond on the property but needs the county’s permission to build with a 10-foot buffer from the pond instead of the 30 feet required by county code.

The Columbia County Planning Commission is scheduled to hear the church’s request at its next scheduled meeting May 4.
