Martinez named Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week as NAU faces UC Davis
Northern Arizona quarterback RJ Martinez was named Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after his performance against Cal Poly last week.
Coming off a 31-29 win on Family Weekend in Flagstaff, Martinez threw for 359 yards and four touchdowns. Martinez had completed 31 of 44 passes in the matchup and will hope to continue the positive trend this week against UC Davis.
Going into this weekends matchup, UC Davis is sitting at 1-4 (0-2 in the Big Sky) and last took on NAU on Nov. 6, 2021, when the Aggies took home the win, 40-24. In that matchup, the Lumberjacks used four different quarterbacks and lost their lead in the second quarter.
NAU's history with UC Davis dates back to 2011, and all seven meetings between the two teams have come in the last 10 years. The Lumberjacks currently hold a 3-1 record against the Aggies in Flagstaff, but are just 1-2 on the road.
UC Davis opened up its 2022 campaign against Cal, losing 34-13 before dropping its second game of the season against South Dakota State, 24-22. The Aggies lone win this season was against the University of San Diego on Sept. 17, 43-13.
After last weekend's win against Cal Poly, NAU looks to build upon what propelled them to victory. The team snapped a three game losing streak in part to redshirt junior defensive back George Steele and redshirt senior defensive back LJ Davis coming up with interceptions in the third quarter.
NAU will kick off against UC Davis on Saturday at 4 p.m. at UC Davis Health Stadium in Davis, Calif. The game will be available on ESPN+ and Hulu with a subscription to the Disney Bundle.
