MARTINSVILLE — The city of Martinsville recognized and paid tribute to the Martinsville Artesian Chess Club during its city council meeting Monday.

The team, which is open to all students in the Metropolitan School District of Martinsville, recently had several members achieve state rankings.

Mayor Kenny Costin read a proclamation designating the week of May 9-13, 2022, as Martinsville Artesian Chess Club Week.

Bixley Davis, a third grader at South Elementary School, won fourth place in the First Grade and Under division for the state of Indiana in 2020.

Westin Kent, a first grader at Brooklyn STEM Academy, placed third in the First Grade and Under division.

Josie Kent, a fourth grader at Brooklyn STEM, is the first Artesian to compete in the national tournament, playing in the All Girls National Chess Championship in Chicago this past April.

The high school team finished in third in place in Indiana as a chess team with members Aiden Bunnell, Jaxon Mathews, Ryan Pilat and Kevin Huang.

Huang is rated as an expert by the U.S. Chess Federation and ranked as one of the top 50 chess players in Indiana.

The next regular meeting of Martinsville Common Council is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday, May 23, in Council Chambers, 59 S. Jefferson St., Martinsville.

Board of Works

The Martinsville Board of Works & Safety approved street closures for three racing events planned this summer:

  • The Rally in the Valley 5K Run and Walk, sponsored by Stability First, will be held from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 25.

  • The Artie Fest 5K will be held from 7:50 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, July 9.

  • The Morgan County Fair and Square 5K, sponsored by the Morgan County Fair, will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6.

All three races start and end at the Morgan County Fairgrounds.

The board also approved a $60,000 agreement with Banning Engineering to continue GIS mapping of the city's sewer and storm water utilities.

The board also approved sewer adjustments for six properties.

The next regular meeting of the Martinsville Board of Works & Safety is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 23, in Council Chambers, 59 S. Jefferson St., Martinsville.
