MARTINSVILLE — In what was a special day for Martinsville senior Andrew Payton, the senior baseball star finally made it official with the University of Evansville, signing his national letter of intent to join the Purple Aces next season.

Payton's simply happy to be able to play after high school. Evansville had a special draw to him, he liked the culture of the program. The Purple Aces are coming off a winning season, going 28-27 this spring.

"The environment down there, it's different, it's kind of like a family type of thing," he said.

Payton possesses a fielding percentage of 96.8% and has recorded 213 put-outs and 55 assists. In addition, he's pitched with an ERA of 4.24 and has 22 runs, 15 RBI's, seven doubles and two homeruns.

In anticipation for his senior season this spring, he's excited to have fun and enjoy playing the sport he loves.

"I'm excited, it's probably going to be the most fun one yet," Payton said. "Probably the one I've been most excited for. We'll be pretty decent this year I think, we've got a lot of good guys, it'll be fun."
