Martyn Lawrence Bullard's Corbett Lighting Collection Is Gorgeously Extravagant
This month, Corbett Lighting-known for strikingly unique shapes and signature high-end fixtures-has tapped Los Angeles-based celebrity designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard to design its latest collection. Bullard brings his signature grandeur and impeccable eye for design into the 40-piece collection, which includes chandeliers, sconces, pendant lights, and more. Evoking the past, present, and future, Bullard incorporated his elevated aesthetic into a diverse array of pieces that truly shine (ba dum dum). In addition to an interior design background, Bullard has developed and produced collections in the fabric, furniture, bedding, bathroom, and even jewelry industries, which helped inform and inspire this latest collaboration. By understanding the properties of light and how it affects the mood and ambience of a space, Bullard was able to unite form and function in each fixture, all of which are infused with his love of glamour and mastery of all styles.
We spoke with Bullard about the new collection, and rounded up some of our favorite picks below.
ELLE DECOR: What was your inspiration for this collection, and why did you decide to partner with Corbett Lighting?
MARTYN LAWRENCE BULLARD: My inspiration has come from all over the place, literally. My travels over the last few years have been so extensive that so much has given me inspiration. These journeys and experiences have all been wrapped into this collection that spans many looks, periods, and materials.
ED: How would you describe your design aesthetic, and how did you express that through the collection?
MLB: My design aesthetic is tailored for my clients each project. I never would want to be cornered as a ‘one look‘ designer, and because of that I love many styles and am inspired by all periods and aesthetics. My collection for Corbett is, as such, a very varied and colorful range of products that have not one directive, but many-offering the end user a wonderful array of products and styles to incorporate into their interiors.
ED: Have you developed other home collections in the past? If so, did that help your process in this partnership with Corbett?
MLB: I have created many collections over the years, from fabric to tile to furniture, porcelain, silver, crystal, mattresses, bathroom fixtures and even jewelry. All this knowledge has definitely allowed me to design product more easily and certainly with an understanding of scale and quality which really helped with the Corbett lighting collections. I believe it has given us the edge and as such my collections are very different from anything ever produced by them before-high in style and modern in use.
ED: How did this collection teach you about the ways lighting affects a home? How did that knowledge help inform your decisions for each piece?
MLB: I already knew that lighting is one of the very most important elements in a room’s decor, in fact I believe lighting can either make or break a room. This collection was designed to provide chic and sexy options that would create beautiful, powerful statements in the rooms they will dress. The great joy of collaborating with Corbett is that they have amazing resources and craftspeople who have worked with me to create original forms, use unexpected materials, provide fine quality and importantly very refined finishes that are usually very hard to achieve.
ED: You probably love every single item from the collection, but if you had to just pick one product to walk away with, what would it be and why?
MLB: I do love all of the collection, however the Melrose is my absolute favorite. The French industrial look with an old school elegance and modern day scale makes me very happy. Two of these now reside rather splendidly in my own kitchen!
ED: What are three words you would use to describe the collection as a whole?
MLB: Strong, sexy, and highly decorative!
