Marvel Studios and Robert Downey Jr have paid tribute to Jimmy Rich, the long-time friend and personal assistant of the Iron Man actor, following his sudden death.

Downey – who started working with Rich back in 2003 on The Singing Detective – announced his passing on Instagram, telling followers: "This is not news. This is a terrible and shocking tragedy."

The Avengers star revealed that Rich had sadly died following a fatal car accident on Wednesday (May 5) evening. "He was a brother, my right hand man, an uncle to our kids and beloved by all who experienced his singular character and wit," he wrote.

Paying tribute to Rich's support and friendship throughout his own recovery from addiction, Downey continued: "Our thoughts go to his relatives, friends, co-workers, and all the fans who knew him as the man who supported every step of my recovery, life and career...

"Again, my condolences to his beautiful family, and the legacy of hope and redemption his life will continue to represent. Peace Be Unto You."

Rich and Downey had worked together on a number of movies, including Avengers: Endgame and most recently Dolittle.

Marvel Studios also paid tribute to Rich, calling him a "great friend" of the company and its team. In a tribute shared on Twitter, they added: "Your love and light were an inspiration to everyone that knew you. We will miss you."

Rest in peace, Jimmy.
