Marvel TV actress Rosario Dawson will switch her allegiance for an upcoming adaptation of DC Comics title DMZ.

According to Entertainment Weekly, this limited event series will be an HBO Max and Warner Bros. Television production from Ava DuVernay and Roberto Patino.

If you're unfamiliar with the comic, DMZ anchors in a near-future USA which is in the midst of its second civil war, and isolated from the rest of the world.

Dawson is onboard as Alma Ortega, a "fearless and fierce" medic who embarks on a heart-rending journey to reunite with her lost son.

On the outskirts of this central storyline, the nation's catastrophic situation is exploited by powerful gangs, including one commanded by the ruthless Parco Delgado (played by Benjamin Bratt).

DMZ hopes to explore a "stark political and cultural divide in American society".

Meanwhile, HBO Max's head of original content Sarah Aubrey can't wait to unleash this harrowing drama onto the small screen.

"DMZ's unflinching story of a country torn apart resonates eerily and profoundly amid our current state of the union," she said in a statement.

"With the powerhouse visionary team of Ava and Roberto at the helm, bringing this critically acclaimed DC gem to life promises to entertain and inspire hope."
