The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel ’s Rachel Brosnahan on Finding Confidence and Drugstore Beauty

Rachel Brosnahan has taken the couch-sitting public by storm and has the hardware to prove it — she's won an Emmy and two Golden Globes for her performance in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. With the help of a top-notch hair and makeup team, she's also managed to develop one of the most recognizable signature hair and makeup looks on television. Brosnahan's Midge Maisel may have a roller coaster of a personal life, but the one thing she's got figured out is her beauty look.

The character is perpetually wearing a bright red lip (in fact, Revlon even launched a Maisel-inspired lipstick collection) and chin-length finger-waved hair. Midge may be stuck in the '50s, but Brosnahan herself has a very 2019 perspective on beauty, strength, and the future of Hollywood.

Ahead of the show's season three premiere on December 6, we talked to her about drugstore beauty, the fight for equality in Hollywood, and, of course, high school wrestling.

On gaining confidence:

"In high school, I convinced my parents to let me try wrestling. I loved how strong I felt and how difficult the workouts were. It was the hardest thing I've ever done. And it was one of the earliest examples I have of men and women being capable of the same kinds of things, no matter what anyone says."

On drugstore buys:

"I've been using Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser since I was 16. [Brosnahan is now a spokesperson for the brand.] When I travel my skin gets dry, so I use it without water and take it off with a cotton pad. It leaves my skin really soft. And I'm obsessed with Maybelline New York Mega Plush Volum' Express Mascara. It has a fat, caterpillar-looking brush, and it does everything. It's like wearing false lashes."

On keeping up appearances:

"While I’m working on Maisel, we have a manicurist who comes once a week, so my nails are in the best shape they’ve ever been in. On my own, I would never have time to get a manicure once a week. I'll paint my own nails with Essie Chinchilly."

On experimenting:

"I used to be very intimidated by beauty. But recently I've enjoyed playing with lipstick. In the morning, throwing on a bold lip can make you look more awake and also feel more awake."

On doing the work:

"We're having a resurgence of the conversation surrounding women's rights. And it's important for me to choose projects that include that as a theme. TV is doing a great job showing intimate and fulfilling female friendships, but I think that film and theater have some catching up to do."
