A familiar face from the past (or future?) will return in the final season of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD.

Viewers might remember The Tick star Patrick Warburton popping in SHIELD'S archival footage in past seasons as General Rick Stoner, a hologram recorded in the 1970s to prepare the Lighthouse for apocalyptic scenarios.

This time around, the SHIELD team might actually get to meet the general in person since Warburton recently confirmed at Dublin Comic Con that he would be back for the ABC show's swansong (via ComicBook).

"Yeah, I'm coming back," he said. "I shot some stuff recently with those guys. That was a lot of fun."

While General Stoner has always been a relic from the past in previous appearances, he might technically be from the future in his next visit.

In order to fight back against the Chronicoms, SHIELD jumped back in time a half-century in the season six finale along with LMD of Coulson (Clark Gregg) to regroup and plot their next move.

Showrunners Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen and Jeffrey Bell recently defended the decision to bring back Coulson in this new way, after killing off the human version last year.

"In introducing [Clark Gregg's villain alter-ego] Sarge, we felt like we were left with a question: If you end up with Sarge being a good guy, then you end up with a watered-down version of the guy we loved, which we didn't want," Whedon explained.

"If you end up with him staying a bad guy, we felt like we just played that for a season. So, there was a lot of discussion about what do we want to do with Clark and what do we want to do with Coulson, because we didn't want to buy back the end of season 5, which we liked. We wanted to honour that."

Marvel's Agents of SHIELD airs on ABC in the US, and on E4 in the UK and will return for season 7 in 2020.
