After six years of thrilling missions, Marvel's Agents of SHIELD will be retiring from our screens after its seventh season airs, according to an exclusive announcement from Deadline.

When asked why the show is ending now – despite the fact that SHIELD had been picked up for another season fairly recently – Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb answered "the simplest answer is so that we can end on our terms, really".

He promised that the show will be taking "greater risks" now that the end has been announced. He said: "You're not playing 'how do we undo this when we get to the next season'. You're playing that this is going to be the end of the story.

"When you know that's what you're doing, you can take greater risks, of life and death."

But wait a minute, isn't the defining feature of most Marvel stories that it's never really over? Loeb reckons, this time, it really is over. Probably.

"I personally believe that every great Marvel story ends to be continued," he said. "But the short answer is, yes, it will conclude in a way that is incredibly emotional and in the best way."

Agents of SHIELD only returned for its sixth season in May of this year, so there is still a way to go before the show leaves our screens for good.

Marvel's Agents of SHIELD airs on ABC in the US and E4 in the UK.
