Of all the ways we expected Marvel's Agents of SHIELD to announce its long-awaited season 6 premiere, we had not pegged a Valentine's Day message as an option!

Yet, a teaser released from the ABC show on Thursday (February 14) reminded fans that Marvel's Agents of SHIELD has been surprisingly romantic - from Fitz and Simmons's literal star-crossed love story to Coulson's "hot lips" nickname.

But nevermind all of the sparks flying, the most exciting part of the clip came right at the very end when it was finally confirmed that Agents of SHIELD will return for a year-long break in May on ABC in the US. No specific date yet, but that should come soon.

The May return date might just allow the show to fully side-step Infinity War snap, since we imagine that will be resolved when Avengers: Endgame premieres on Thursday, April 25 in the UK and a day later in the US.

There's also potential for the show to explore Clark Gregg's flashback appearance as Agent Coulson in Captain Marvel, which will have also been released by the time SHIELD returns.

As the season 6 recent trailer revealed, Clark Gregg will be back in spite of Coulson being killed off in the season five finale - but he says that's possible because he's playing an entirely new character this year.

"[It's] very strange," he recently said. "The Coulson role and persona, though always evolving and always having new parts of him revealed to me by our writers, became a very familiar skin in a way and to kind of change all that and suddenly find myself playing this other very mysterious person, who is not Phil Coulson.

"The mystery of who that person is and why he looks like that is something that they’ve done groundbreaking, wild stuff with, that I’m really lucky to play."

Agents of SHIELD returns for season 6 in May on ABC in the US and hopefully soon after in the UK on E4, with a seventh also in the works.
