The Marvels spoilers follow.

Fresh Meat star Zawe Ashton is confirmed to be playing a gender-swapped Marvel Comics villain in The Marvels, which unveiled its first trailer today (April 11).

Disney has officially revealed that Ashton has been cast as Dar-Benn, a Kree warrior who was originally depicted as male when he debuted in Silver Surfer comics in the 1990s.

Dar-Benn is a high-ranking member of the Kree military empire and possesses an accuser's hammer like the one used by Ronan in Guardians of the Galaxy and the first Captain Marvel movie.

Away from the screen, Zawe is the real-life partner of Tom Hiddleston, who has plenty of experience of his own as a Marvel villain from his decade-plus as Loki in the MCU.

Aside from playing Vod in Channel 4's Fresh Meat, Zawe has made memorable appearances on TV in Doctor Who and The Handmaid's Tale, in addition to the Netflix horror movie Velvet Buzzsaw.

The Marvels will pit Dar-Benn against three powerful heroes when Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) come together through cosmic means.

The film also brings back Samuel L Jackon as Nick Fury, as well as Ms Marvel cast members Saagar Shaikh, Zenobia Shroff and Mohan Kapur.

Marvel boss Kevin Feige has been hyping this union of three superheroes as being similar in importance to an Avengers movie.

"There's something immensely powerful about seeing Monica and Kamala and Carol together in a frame," he told EW.

"To me, it's only akin to the first Avengers movie and seeing the six of them together in a frame. It's chill-inducing. They're so great together, and they all have different histories with another."

The Marvels has a release date of November 10, 2023. Captain Marvel is streaming on Disney+ and available on DVD, Blu-ray and digital download.
