CHILLICOTHE — The beloved nanny Mary Poppins will be flying into Chillicothe this week.

The Chillicothe Civic Theatre is presenting four shows of "Mary Poppins," with the hopes of having the audience singing "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" all the way home.

The show will take place at Chillicothe High School with doors opening one hour before showtime.

Director Todd Tinker put in to be the director as soon as he could. A self-proclaimed "Disney fanatic" Tinker brought his enthusiasm to the project. He believes audiences will be entertained by the tap dancers, singers and pit orchestra performances throughout the show.

Not only will audiences be entertained but they will learn the important lesson of valuing family.

The stage adaptation of Mary Poppins is a mixture of the original children's book written by P. L. Travers and the 1964 Disney movie. Despite not having movie magic to make things fly, the stage crew is still able to make Poppins and her magical bag come to life.

Quincey Newsome, who plays Bert, was thrilled to be cast in the role as the first song he ever auditioned with at the civic theatre was "Chim Chim Cher-ee." He says that the classic tale of Mary Poppins is still relatable today, just as it was when it first came out.

"It's like 1910 still exists in 2020," Newsome said.

The iconic character of Mary Poppins will be played by Carolyn Adelsperger who has been with the theater since 2015, working both on stage and behind the scenes. Being a teacher she has found her role as Poppins very interesting as she can relate to the nanny's personality and character.

"It is fun to play someone so similar but different," Adelsperger said.

Adelsperger is excited to have people come to see the show she and the rest of the cast have been working hard on.

"It's going to be great," Adelsperger said. "Come see the show."

The two-act musical will run at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and 1 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are available on the theater's website.
