The Marygrove Conservancy is preparing to celebrate the first major public event held on the campus in more than two years.

The Detroit nonprofit that stewards the campus of the former Marygrove College, which shut down in 2019, will host a summer block party event from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The event, on the historic 53-acre campus, is free to attend and will feature local, live entertainment as well as campus tours, family activities, community resources and free food for the first 500 guests. Among the highlights are laptop giveaways by Human IT and a performance by the Detroit Youth Choir.

“We are completely activating our campus and opening up the entire campus for the community,” said Marygrove Conservancy chief operating officer Racheal Allen. “All of our 40-plus tenants and community partners will be on-site. Our schools will be here. We’ll even have free ice cream!”

The event will also serve as an enrollment event for an elementary school that now operates on the former college campus. The School at Marygrove will host its inaugural classes for kindergarten through second grade students for the 2022-23 school year. Staff and representatives from all grades will be present to provide information and offer on-site enrollment assistance.

“We’ll also have community partners doing art demonstrations,” said Allen, “and Michigan Humane Society doing a pet vaccination and microchipping clinic.

“We’re really encouraging folks from all across the city — not just the neighborhoods — to attend. We’re aiming for that old-school, block party kind of feel. Whether you’re a young person or one of our seniors in the community, there’s resources and fun and entertainment for everyone.”
