Maryland baseball returns to NCAA tournament for first time since 2017, will face Charlotte in Greenville Regional

The Maryland baseball team will make its first NCAA tournament appearance since 2017 after earning the No. 3 seed in the Greenville Regional on Monday afternoon.

The Terps will take on No. 2 seed Charlotte on Friday at 6 p.m. at East Carolina’s Clark-LeClair Stadium.

Maryland, which finished second in the Big Ten standings and enters the tournament with a 28-16 mark, advanced to the 64-team NCAA tournament for the seventh time in program history.

No. 13 overall seed East Carolina is the top seed in the regional, while Norfolk State was given the four seed. Those teams will play Friday at noon. Each regional field features four teams, playing in a double-elimination format. All 16 regionals are scheduled to be conducted from Friday, June 4 to Monday, June 7.

The national top 16 seeds are Arkansas (46-10), Texas (42-15), Tennessee (45-16), Vanderbilt (40-15), Arizona (40-15), TCU (40-17), Mississippi St. (40-15), Texas Tech (36-15), Stanford (33-14), Notre Dame (30-11), Old Dominion (42-14), Ole Miss (41-19), East Carolina (41-15), Oregon (37-14), Florida (38-20), and Louisiana Tech (40-18).

“I have been a part of some really special teams during my career and this group ranks towards to top,” Terps coach Rob Vaughn said. “I cannot tell you how proud I am of this group of men that has overcome so much adversity and put themselves in a position to stay together for at least another week.”

Maryland features six All-Big Ten selections in shortstop Benjamin Cowles (first team), outfielder Chris Alleyne, (second team), right-hander Ryan Ramsey (second team), Matthew Shaw (All-Freshman), Jason Savacool (All-Freshman), and Luke Shliger (All-Freshman).

The Terps’ last NCAA regional appearance came in 2017, when Maryland went 1-2 at the Winston-Salem Regional.

Selection of the eight super regional hosts will be announced June 8 at approximately 8 a.m. The College World Series begins play Saturday, June 19, at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska.
