Maryland football lands pair of three-star prospects in EDGE Dillan Fontus, CB Tayvon Nelson

Maryland football received a pair of commitments Saturday from edge rusher Dillan Fontus and defensive back Tayvon Nelson.

The three-star prospects, who both play for Canarsie High School in Brooklyn, New York, represent the 17th and 18th members of the Terps’ 2023 recruiting class, which entered Saturday ranked No. 45 in the country according to 247Sports. Maryland has landed seven commitments this month, including St. Vincent Pallotti safety Alex Moore.

The 6-foot-5, 245-pound Fontus is the second-best player in New York and the 80th-best edge rusher in the nation, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. Fontus picked Maryland over Big Ten Conference foes Indiana, Nebraska and Illinois as well as Arizona, Louisville, West Virginia and others.

The 6-1, 175-pound Nelson is the No. 8 player in New York and No. 115 cornerback in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. Before making his decision, Nelson fielded offers from West Virginia, Penn State, Arizona, Arizona State and Miami (Fla.), among others.

Maryland’s 2023 recruiting class currently has no four- or five-star players. St. Frances wide receiver Ryan Manning, McDonogh offensive lineman Tamarus Walker and Loyola Blakefield tight end AJ Szymanski are among the top players from the state to commit to the Terps for next season.
