Suspect in Maryland judge killing found dead after weeklong manhunt: Updates

Authorities in Maryland have found the body of a man suspected of killing a judge who revoked custody of his children.

Judge Andrew Wilkinson was found dead from gunshot wounds in the driveway of his home in Hagerstown, Maryland, on 19 October.

Law enforcement including US Marshals launched a massive manhunt for 49-year-old Pedro Argote after accusing him of targeting the judge in anger over a court ruling. The Marshals had offered a reward of $10,000 for any information that led to his arrest.

Officials announced on Thursday that Argote had been found deceased during a search in a heavily wooded area in Williamsport, just a mile from the place where his car was found last week.

A cause of death has not been provided.

Hours before Argote is believed to have shot Wilkinson, the judge granted custody of Mr Argote’s four children to his ex-wife, Eugeina Argote, in a divorce hearing after hearing “shocking” testimony from his adult daughter from a separate relationship.

Court records show he has a history of verbal domestic assaults against his wife and family.

Judge Andrew Wilkinson was fatally shot in the driveway of his home in Hagerstown, Maryland, on Thursday evening.

At around 8pm, police were called to the home to find him suffering gunshot wounds.

He was rushed to Meritus Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Wilkinson was born in Agana, Guam in 1971. His family moved around a lot during his childhood as part of the military, but settled in Hagerstown when his mother was hired as a law clerk for Judge Frederick Wright III in 1983.

He received a bachelor’s degree in economics at the University of North Carolina before earning his law degree from the Emory University School of Law in 1997.

Who is the suspect?

Monday 23 October 2023 14:10 , Rachel Sharp

Police identified the suspect in the killing as 49-year-old Pedro Argote on Friday morning.

Mr Argote’s divorce case was in Wilkinson’s courtroom on the day of the killing, according to Circuit Court of Maryland records. Authorities said Mr Argote was not at the hearing, where Wilkinson gave his wife custody of their children.

Wilkinson has been presiding over the case - seeking a partial judgment of absolute divorce - since October 2022.

Another hearing in the case was set for 31 October, but the records now show that it has been postponed/reset.

Police have described Mr Argote as 5 foot 7 inches tall, 130 lbs, with black hair and brown eyes.

They believe he could be driving a silver 2009 Mercedes GL450, with the Maryland registration plate of 4EH0408.

The vehicle was found abandoned in a wooded area over the weekend – but there is still no sign of Mr Argote.

The public has been warned not to approach Mr Argote but to contact the police immediately with any information on his location.

What we know about Pedro Argote’s alleged past

Judge Wilkinson had awarded custody of the Argotes’ four children to Eugenia Argote hours before he was shot and killed.

The suspect had a history of controlling and cruel behaviour towards his ex-wife, according to court documents.

This behaviour reportedly included keeping hold of her car keys at all times so he knew when she was leaving home, stealing money from her, harassing her via text messages, using security cameras to monitor her, and even an accusation that he had been violent with their child.

The couple also had a long history of domestic incidents and in 2012, his ex-wife claimed, adding that she had tried to get help from a domestic violence advocacy center.

Judge Wilkinson also granted a temporary order in June 2022 which required Mr Argote to leave the couple’s shared residence and surrender his firearms. However the order was later dismissed at Ms Argote’s request, though it is unclear why.

The background of the case

A manhunt is underway for Pedro Argote, Ms Argote’s ex-husband and the main suspect in the shooting. Police warned the public that the 49-year-old is considered armed and dangerous.

Judge Wilkinson had presided over the divorce case since June 2022.

Ms Argote had petitioned the court for a protective order, writing that her husband was extremely controlling. He kept her car keys at all times so he knew when she was leaving home and stole money from her, The Maryland Daily Record reported.

Ms Argote said her ex-husband harassed her via text messages and used security cameras to monitor her, NBC News reported. She also accused him of being violent with their 11-year-old child in 2020.

ICYMI: the ties between the suspected shooter and the judge

Investigators named Pedro Argote, 49, as a suspect in the killing, with court records showing he had his divorce court case presided over Mr Wilkinson the same day.

Mr Argote is not in custody and is currently considered armed and dangerous, Sheriff Brian Albert said at a press conference on Friday.

He confirmed that police believe “this was a targeted attack of Judge Wilkinson.”

The sheriff said that earlier in the day, Mr Wilkinson gave custody of Mr Argote’s children to his ex-partner, alluding that this may be why the judge was targeted. However, the sheriff also said that Mr Argote was not in attendance at the court hearing.

“The assassination of Judge Wilkinson should be shocking to all Americans,” said Chief Judge Anna Blackburne-Rigsby, President of the Conference of Chief Justices, and Greg Sattizahn, President of the Conference of State Court Administrators.

“Unfortunately, we fear it is not. The sustained attacks in recent years on the rule of law, public institutions of government and the courts are now having their effects. We ask all Americans to think carefully about this troubling trend because normalizing these attacks will in no way make us better, safer, or more peaceful. If anything, it will only come with more troubling and dire consequences, as Judge Wilkinson’s family can now sadly attest. To his family and our colleagues in the Maryland judiciary, we send our deepest condolences.”

According to data compiled by the National Center for State Courts, this is the third targeted shooting of a state judge in the last three years.

The divorce petition from Eugenia Argote

USA Today obtained Ms Argote’s 2022 divorce petition, in which she claims that Pedro Argote, her then-husband, was emotionally abusive to her and that she was afraid to be near him.

“I have been trying to get out of this relationship for the longest time, but for the fear that he will try to get custody of the kids,” she wrote.

Her ex-husband had carried his firearm “at all times,” she continued. Mr Argote also didn’t allow her to use their car or have access to their shared finances.

“I can’t get out of the house without his knowledge,” she continued. “I don’t know what to do...Please I need help.”

A rise in attacks on judges

According to the AP, “Judges across the U.S. have been the target of threats and occasional violence in recent years. President Joe Biden last year signed a bill to give around-the-clock security protection to the families of Supreme Court justices after the leak of a draft court opinion overturning the Roe v. Wade abortion-rights decision, which prompted protests outside the homes of conservative U.S. Supreme Court justices.”

The National Center for State Courts reported that this incident marks the third targeted shooting of a state judge in the last three years.

Hagerstown, a city in Maryland, boasts a population of 44,000, according to the census. It sits near the borders of Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

This shooting is unusual to the area, as Washington County in Maryland has only reported two homicides - one in April and one in July - in 2023, according to the sheriff’s office.

Pedro Argote has connections outside of the state of Maryland, according to US Marshals Service, including Tampa and Clearwater in Florida, Columbus in Indiana and unknown cities in North Carolina.

The greater manhunt comes after the search for Mr Argote in the Williamsport, Maryland area concluded over the weekend.

Chilling words from Eugenia Argote

Chilling words from Judge Wilkinson long before his tragic death

The AP revealed details from court documents from the Argotes’ divorce hearings. Judge Wilkinson, who presided over the case, gave full custody of their four young children to Pedro Arugote’s ex-wife, Eugenia, after hearing moving testimony from Mr Argote’s adult daughter from a separate relationship.

“The manner in which Mr. Argote has isolated these children and mom over the past two years, I think that has gone on throughout the marriage, and it’s shocking,” the judge said. “I think he is abusive in multiple ways.”

Mr Argote was not in court on Thursday; hours later, Judge Wilkinson ended up dead with gun shot wounds in his driveway.

Shocking testimony from Pedro Argote’s adult daughter

Judge Wilkinson reportedly gave Eugenia Argote full custody of the couple’s four younger children after hearing chilling testimony from Mr Argote’s adult daughter from a previous relationship.

The Associated Press obtained an audio recording of the testimony, in which the unnamed adult daughter said she spent most of her adolescence in her bedroom, as her father allegedly put cameras all over the house and was “watching my every move.”

She said he would beat her with a belt and other objects — “whatever he had close by.”

“The reason I worked up the courage to testify was so that my siblings wouldn’t have to go through the mental torment that I currently have,” she told the court. She added that she fled from home at 18 to escape the abuse; she hasn’t been in contact with her father since.

Pedro Argote filed for divorce in June 2022 after he learned that his wife Eugenia Argote was planning to leave him, the AP reported. This sparked some abusive behaviour toward his partner and their children, she claimed.

Days later, she requested a protective order, saying Mr Argote was carrying a gun and surveilling her.

Later that same month, she requested for the protective order to be dismissed, as the couple had agreed on a “nesting arrangement” where Mr Argote would live on the first floor of their shared home while she would live upstairs.

Thursday 26 October 2023 20:13 , Graeme Massie

“Washington County community can breathe a little easier this afternoon,” said Sheriff Brian Albert at a Thursday afternoon press conference.

Argote’s body will undergo an autopsy to find out the cause of his death.

“It’s a relief but it is still a tragedy we are dealing with. It brings a little bit of closure to them but it is still a tragedy they lost a husband, father and brother,” said the sheriff. And he added: “Everyone should sleep a little bit better tonight.”

The sheriff said that it was an ongoing investigation but added, “We are pretty sure we got our guy.”

And he stated that there was no prior threat made against the judge and that “added security” had been installed in the community to protect judges although he declined to characterise what that was.

“The family was relieved that we brought this to a little bit of closure,” he said when asked how they had reacted to news of Argote’s death.

Suspect in killing of judge who presided over divorce case found dead in rural Maryland

Thursday 26 October 2023 20:20 , Andrea Blanco

Authorities believe Pedro Argote, 49, was angry about losing custody of his children when he shot and killed the judge who presided over his divorce case.

The 19 October attack unfolded outside the home of Washington County Circuit Court Judge Andrew Wilkinson.

Law enforcement launched a search for Argote immediately after the shooting. They discovered his Mercedes SUV in a wooded area in Williamsport, about 8 miles southwest of Hagerstown, where the judge was shot.

Authorities searched the area where the vehicle was found but concluded Argote wasn’t there. But officials said this morning they had returned to the area to conduct “additional evidentiary searches.”

Argote’s body was found in a heavily wooded area about a mile from the SUV, officials said. They did not release a suspected cause of death.

Authorities brief community on latest developments in investigation of Judge Wilkinson’s murder

Thursday 26 October 2023 21:00 , Andrea Blanco

Pedro Argote was found deceased this morning by Maryland State Police along with other agencies, Washington County Sheriff Bryan Albert.

The body was found in a heavily wooded area between Clearspring Road and Bottom Road, approximately one mile from the site where his vehicle was found last week.

The remains have been transported to the office of the medical examiner, where Argote’s cause and manner of death, as well as his time of death, will be determined.

“I’d like to thank my personnel for their tireless work and dedication during this investigation. Most of us have not slept a good night’s sleep since last Thursday,” Sheriff Albert said, also thanking several other local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.

The sheriff said that many members of his department were at Judge Wilkinson’s viewing when they received the news of Argote’s body being found.

“They were very appreciative. They’re relieved to have some closure but it’s still a tragedy,” the sheriff said. “They lost a husband, a father and a brother.”

Sheriff Albert said that authorities are searching the area where the body was found, but declined to say whether a weapon was found near Argote’s remains.

An audio recording of the hearing didn’t capture any obvious warning signs that Pedro Argote posed a danger to anyone outside his family, but it does provide new insight into the abuse allegations he was facing.

His adult daughter from a previous relationship said she spent most of her teenage years confined to her bedroom.

She said Argote had cameras installed throughout the house and was “watching my every move.” During emotional testimony, she said he would beat her with a belt and other objects — “whatever he had close by.”

“The reason I worked up the courage to testify was so that my siblings wouldn’t have to go through the mental torment that I currently have,” she told the court, explaining that she left home at 18 to escape the abuse and hadn’t had contact with her father since.

Wilkinson concluded that Argote wasn’t fit to have custody of his four younger children, ages 12, 11, 5 and 3.
