Maryland man killed in Glasgow after being hit by Jeep, police say

A 35-year-old Maryland man who police said was walking in the middle of a turn lane died early Thursday morning after being hit by a Jeep in Glasgow.

Delaware State Police were called to Route 40 (Pulaski Highway), east of Rosetree Lane, around 12:45 a.m. for reports of the crash. There, they found the 35-year-old dead.

Through their investigation, troopers learned the man, who will be identified once his family is notified, was walking west on Route 40 in the middle of the right-turn lane.

The Jeep, driven by a 22-year-old man from Newark, merged into the right-turn lane to enter a housing development, police said. The 35-year-old then "suddenly appeared in the path of the Jeep."

State police said the driver of the Jeep tried to move around the man but hit him from behind. The man was "projected forward in a westerly direction and came to rest in the middle of the right thru lane."

The Jeep continued "several feet" off the road and crashed down an embankment.

Police said the pedestrian was wearing dark clothes and was unable to be seen. The driver of the Jeep was uninjured.
