According to a preliminary investigation, the moped was hit by a maroon 2000 Ford pickup, which left the scene of the crash, the release states. The initial release on the crash alleges the pickup driver was impaired.

The 43-year-old Hagerstown man who was driving the pickup was taken into custody and released, according to Sgt. A. Matthai.

The Washington County State's Attorney's Office is reviewing the case to determine charges, he said.

The Herald-Mail is withholding the pickup driver's name because he hasn't been formally charged yet.

State police were notified around 9:14 p.m. Thursday of a collision on westbound U.S. 40, west of Garland Groh Boulevard, the release states.

Troopers found the deceased couple when they arrived at the scene.

State police continue to investigate the crash.

U.S. 40 in that area reopened around 1 a.m., Matthai said.
