After nearly two years of hard work, the Marysville Police Department has been accredited by the Michigan Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission.

To earn this professional accomplishment, the Marysville Police Department had to prove that it met the 108 standards put forth by the commission, which is overseen by the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police. These standards cover various areas and situations such as the canine program, media relations and police pursuits.

Public Safety Deputy Chief Ed Gerrow said as the department went through the accreditation process, it saw that it already did what the commission was asking for.

"There's a lot of changes that occurred, and all for the better," Gerrow said. "What it boils down to is we have a very professional police department and now we can prove it."

To stay accredited, the Marysville Police Department needs to continue to meet all 108 standards to the Michigan Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission's specifications.

Gerrow said there are benefits to this achievement. He said the accreditation will help bring down the insurance rates in Marysville for liability and it would help mitigate litigations against the police department because they have checks and balances for all its areas.

The police department was officially accredited on Sept. 27. The department will be presenting their award at the Oct. 23 Marysville City Council meeting.
