Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Wake County opened sites to distribute free N95 masks on Thursday, and at least two sites ran out in the first few hours. The state Department of Health and Human Services provided more than 200,000 masks to five different locations. It is unclear if and when they will be restocked. (WRAL)

  2. Governor Roy Cooper declared a State of Emergency ahead of this round of winter storms. The declaration will allow quicker storm preparation, response, and power restoration. (WBTV) Wake, Johnston, and Durham Schools will be closed today in anticipation of poor conditions. (abc11)

  3. Raleigh police have seen an increase in cars being broken into near parks and greenways. Within the past month, Durant Nature Preserve has seen about five break-ins, while the whole Raleigh Greenway system typically averages one or two. The Raleigh City Council already approved nearly $600,000 for a new RPD Parks and Greenways Unit, and it hopes to add additional lighting and cameras within the next year. (CBS17)

  4. A Raleigh man who was convicted on federal drug and firearm charges while on probation has been sentenced to 30 years in prison. Keith Lamont Thompson Jr. was convicted in October on numerous charges and was subjected to additional sentencing penalties due to former convictions in 2014 and 2018. (CBS17)

  5. Lawyers working for N.C. Attorney General Josh Stein are poised to ask the Supreme Court to jump back into the Leandro school funding dispute. A notice was filed on Tuesday, warning the justices that the attorney general's office plans to seek a bypass petition, to be filed as early as next week. The request would mean that the case would bypass the N.C. Court of Appeals to be heard by the highest court. (LaurinburgExchange)
