Mason Curtis, a 4-star 2024 Ensworth linebacker, commits to Michigan football

Ensworth junior linebacker Mason Curtis didn't just fall in love with the Michigan football program.

He fell in love with everything about the school, including the city of Ann Arbor.

That's what led the 4-star recruit to commit to the Wolverines on Monday, following an unofficial visit to the school over the weekend.

"I really, truly believe it was a smart decision, not just for four years of football, but also for my education," Curtis said. "The people there are authentic and raw. You can't get any more real than the coaches and people at Michigan."

Curtis is ranked as the No. 14 linebacker nationally (second overall in Tennessee) in the 2024 class by 247Sports.

He also had offers from Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, Kentucky, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Michigan State, Memphis and West Virginia, among others.

"When I was up there, me and my mom (Dawn) felt it," Curtis said. "I looked at her, mid-visit, and told her, 'This is the one.'

"I got a good feel for the city. My mom really trusts (Ann Arbor). I'm her youngest, and she trusts them to take care of me. If she trusts that, everything else is sold. The football program speaks for itself. The people speak for themselves. It was all great."

He hadn't made final five or 10 list yet, but went with his gut during the Michigan visit.

"I was going to narrow it down, but I found a home at Michigan," Curtis said.

Curtis had 34 tackles (five for loss), a sack, two interceptions and three caused fumbles as a sophomore.

He was able to sit down and speak with Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh during the visit.

"We had a good conversation," Curtis said. "With me being able to do that, I got a good feel for who he is. He gets a lot of criticism in the media, but most people don't see just me and him in person, talking."

His older brother, former Brentwood Academy standout Devyn Curtis, is a linebacker at Middle Tennessee State.

"(Devyn) has been through it," Mason Curtis said. "He gave me some good advise. (After finding the right school), he told me, 'Don't wait. Do it.' "
