MASON — Rebecca Brunner, a Mason native who competed on NBC's "The Voice" in 2017, recently auditioned for this season of ABC's "American Idol," and let her fans know with a playful Instagram post.

Brunner, 27, announced her audition for the singing competition on her Instagram account last month. In a Feb. 15 post, Brunner captioned a photo of herself outside the audition venue: "The secrets out!!! I auditioned for @americanidol, do you think I got a golden ticket from the judges?"

She performed in front of celebrity judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Ritchie, who award top contestants with "golden tickets" to advance further into the musical competition.

"American Idol's" newest season began airing on Feb. 19. New episodes air Sundays on ABC.

Brunner can't comment on her audition, said Lauran Kenyon Cummings, a spokesperson for the show, in an email; it has not aired yet.

This is the third time Brenner, a 2013 Mason High School graduate, has competed in a televised competition. Brunner auditioned for the show, "America's Got Talent," in 2016, a year before making it through blind auditions on "The Voice" and securing a spot on celebrity judge Blake Shelton's team.

Brunner was eliminated during the show's "battle" rounds later in the season. That hasn't stopped her from pursuing the career in music that she's dreamed of since performing in a talent show in elementary school.

Bobbi London, her mother, who owns El Azteco West, said it was obvious after that first childhood performance that she had a voice worth developing.

"She's always been like, 'Mom, where can I sing?'" Landon said. "She's always been 100% about the music."

Brenner earned a degree in music from Columbia College Chicago after high school, then moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in 2021. Her single, "Round Hole," with Song House, a songwriters group there, was released last year and she's currently working on her first album.

Brenner is expected to perform in Mason this summer at the Sun-Dried Music Festival.

"I am her biggest fan," London said. "She is just a strong girl. She's definitely never given up."

Last year, Dansville native and former East Lansing nurse Jacob Moran made it to "American Idol's" top 20 contestants before being eliminated from the competition.
