Mass. average price for regular unleaded gas is $3.37 — lower than a year ago

In a statistical oddity that likely nobody thought possible a short while ago, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas sold in Massachusetts is actually lower now than it was a year ago.

According to AAA Northeast, this week's state average of $3.37 per gallon is 6 cents lower than it was a week ago and a penny lower than a year ago.

“Increasing supply and soft gasoline demand are pushing pump prices lower,” said Mary Maguire, vice president of public and government affairs for AAA Northeast. "Gasoline throughout the Northeast is now cheaper than the same time last year, which might have seemed unimaginable when prices peaked at record highs this past summer.”

The current state average is a whopping 39 cents per gallon lower than it was a just month ago ($3.76). But it's also 27 cents higher than the national average of $3.10.

The cheapest price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas in MetroWest is $3 even at the BP station on Main Street (Route 140) in Upton, according to gasbuddy.com. In Ashland, it's $3.03 at Ashland Auto Service Center on Homer Avenue, and just a penny higher at the Exxcel Mini Mart station on Pond Street (Route 126).

AAA Northeast is a nonprofit auto club with 70 offices in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey that provides more than 6 million local AAA members with travel, insurance, finance and auto-related services.
