Mass. man again posts bond in Plainfield underage kidnapping, sex assault case

DANIELSON — A 22-year-old Massachusetts man crossed state lines in March to have sex with a 13-year-old Plainfield girl at a local motel where police said they discovered an array of sex toys, drugs and restraints, according to newly released court documents.

Connor Tidd, who police identified as a Quincy resident, but whose driver’s license lists his hometown as Tyngsboro, Massachusetts, was arraigned Thursday in Danielson Superior Court a day after authorities charged him with several new charges related to the alleged kidnapping and sexual assault of an underage girl at the Moosup Elite Inn at 66 E. Main St.

At approximately 1:14 a.m. on March 18, Plainfield police arrived at the motel after the victim’s relatives reported her missing about an hour prior. Family members said they found discord chats on the teen’s computer in which she and Tidd discussed meeting at the motel, according to an arrest warrant application.

'Old enough to get into trouble'

Police said they found girl hiding in a motel room shower stall and Tidd in an entry doorway. When police asked Tidd his age, he responded, “old enough to get into trouble,” the warrant states.

Police said the motel room contained an open condom wrapper, various sex toys and fast-acting THC gummies, along with a Swiss Army knife and sections of duct tape fashioned into restraints, the warrant states.

Tidd, after apologizing to police, asked “if he would have a future” multiple times, but declined to detail his interactions with the girl. He was charged with risk of injury to a minor and interfering with an investigation.

He posted a $250,000 bond soon after his arraignment on March 20 in Danielson Superior Court, was outfitted with a GPS monitor and told not to leave the state.

On Wednesday, after weeks of work by the department’s special investigation unit, Plainfield police levied a slew of new charges in the case. Tidd was charged with two counts of first-degree kidnapping – one in advance of a felony and another related to sexual abuse; second-degree sexual assault; two counts of risk of injury to a minor (one involving sexual contact); two counts of illegal distribution of a controlled substance; and enticing a minor.

Defendant allegedly met victim via an online dating app

According to messages extracted from the alleged victim's phone, Tidd in early and mid-March discussed meeting the girl for sex at a local motel after previously connecting through a social media dating app in which she said Tidd listed his age as 15, according to the warrant.

During one exchange, the girl said Tidd stated “if it wasn’t for your age, it would be perfect,” the warrant states.

When interviewed by police, the girl said Tidd drove her to the motel where the defendant gave her THC edibles and the two had sex. Up to that point, the girl said she had never so much as kissed a boy before.

When police arrived at the motel, the girl said Tidd “unadded” her on a pair of dating apps and told her “I don’t exist and you don’t know me,” the warrant states.

Defendant posted bond - additional bond levied for new charges

During his most recent arraignment on Thursday, Judge Kevin Shay kept intact a new $500,000 bond, despite arguments from Attorney Mathew Olkin that the new charges stemmed from a previous incident in which bond had already been set.

Olkin, who was set to only represent Tidd for arraignment purposes – Attorney Jerome Paun will handle future proceedings – noted his client had been compliant with the host of bond release restrictions previously ordered, including having no contact with minors, no computer usage and remaining in Connecticut.

He said his client has no previous criminal record and posed no flight risk. Olkin said Shay was likely familiar with cases in which a half-million-dollar bond was justified.

“I am familiar (with those kind of charges),” Shay said. “And one is first-degree kidnapping.”

Soon after his arraignment, Tidd, who has not pleaded to any of the charges, was seen posting bond. The criminal clerk’s office said he posted $35,150 toward his release and was due back in court on June 16.

His cases were moved to the court’s Part A docket where the region’s most serious cases are heard.

Outside the courthouse, Olkin said he hadn’t yet seen any evidence related to the new charges and urged the community to remember defendants are due the presumption of innocence.
