‘Mass shooting. People down’: 911 calls reveal frantic scene during Doral bar shooting

Newly released 911 calls captured the chaos and panic on April 6 at the Martini Bar in CityPlace Doral, where a mass shooting left two dead and seven people shot, including a police officer and a bar patron in critical condition.

The shooting began around 3:30 a.m. at the bar, one of the few businesses open at that hour in CityPlace Doral, the relatively new, popular gathering spot on Northwest 36th Street and 83rd Avenue, according to police and witnesses.

”Martini Bar Doral. Shooting. Shooting,” one of the callers exclaimed. “Mass shooting. People down, officer down, many people [shot.]”

“Please, I beg you,” a woman said in Spanish before telling the operator that someone she was with had been shot. “They’re dying.”

Caught in the gunfire were six bar patrons, identified as Lester Williams Gonzalez, 28; Frank Miguel Jerez, 34; Yaniris Jerez, 30; Sonia Munoz Torres, 48; Gerard Patrick Delaney, 57; and 38-year-old Carlos Milan. One unidentified Doral police officer was also injured.

The shooting stemmed from an argument between Jamal Wayne Wood and another man, police say. When a 23-year-old security guard, George Alejandro Castellanos, intervened, Wood shot him to death on the first floor of the bar’s covered terrace., police said Castellanos was the father to a 1-year-old girl and was set to graduate in the spring from Florida International University.

Two Doral officers in uniform, but working off-duty, were just outside the bar when they heard the gunfire and raced toward it, police said. They subsequently confronted Wood and fired rounds at him.

Wood shot back, police say. He was killed.

“Emergency,” another caller said in Spanish, growing increasingly frustrated as he awaited a translator. “We need an ambulance urgently.”
