Mass. teen charged with drunken boating after crashing boat into woods on Lake Sunapee

Jun. 12—A Massachusetts teen is facing a drunken-boating charge after state police allege he crashed a boat 20 feet up a hill and into some woods along the shoreline of Lake Sunapee late Saturday.

Around 10:01 p.m., state police received a call reporting a boat crash on Lake Sunapee near the Lake Sunapee Yacht Club. New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol officers, Sunapee police and fire, and New London ambulance personnel responded.

Upon arrival, officers reported finding a 22-foot Mastercraft boat approximately 20 feet on shore, resting on a steep hill in trees and brush. The two occupants were still in the vessel and were not injured.

The crash was reportedly heard across the lake at Blodgett Landing in Newbury, state police said in a statement.

The boat's operator, identified as Michael Smith, 19, of Hingham, Mass., was arrested and charged with boating while intoxicated.
