Mass. town’s all-female firefighting crew makes history

For the first time in the town’s 247-year history, a Barre Fire company was staffed by an all-female crew.

The historic company, Barre Ladder Co. 1, consisted of firefighter/EMT Jennifer Walker, firefighter/EMT Christina Gustafson, and firefighter/paramedic Emily Walker.

The trio worked the night shift, where they battled a blaze on Old Dana Road. There were no injuries in the fire but the family’s dog did not make it, according to authorities.

“Barre Fire is proud of all our members,” the department wrote in a social media post. “Unfortunately during this history-making incident, a local family suffered a devastating loss.”

The cause of that fire is undetermined, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
