Massachusetts' first Topgolf location set to open. Why it's a 'huge milestone' for company

CANTON − Topgolf Boston-Canton will open next month at 777 Dedham St. in Canton, marking the national chain's first location in Massachusetts, the company has announced.

The location is scheduled to open on Friday, Nov. 3, according to a statement from the company.

"Opening our first venue in Massachusetts is a huge milestone for us, and we can't wait to introduce our style of play to the Boston area," said Topgolf COO Gen Gray. "There's been a ton of excitement within the Topgolf family about this venue opening, and we're so excited to see it come to life."

The company bought the 15-acre property, which consisted of an empty trailer parking area, from Cumberland Farms for $6.2 million in 2019.

The Canton site is the 84th outdoor venue in the U.S. and 94th globally. It opened a site in Rhode Island earlier this month.

What is Topgolf?

Topgolf bills itself as a "sports entertainment complex" with a "high-tech golf game."

While it might have golf in the name, giant nets to stop balls and a green like a golf course, Topgolf isn't really a driving range. Rather, it's a scored game where players get points for hitting balls into the right spots.

Each ball has a microchip so it can be tracked in flight and into targets, each worth a specific number of points.

The Canton location will have about 400 employees and will feature 90 outdoor climate-controlled bays spanning three levels, the announcement from Topgolf says.

Each bay has lounge-type furniture or high-top tables where groups can cheer – or heckle – the other players.

"Topgolf takes its 'not golf' very seriously," the announcement said. "That's why a full-service restaurant manned by executive chefs, 28-foot video wall, more than 200 HDTVs (ideal for watching the Pats or Red Sox), music and year-round family-friendly programming is just as much a part of the Topgolf experience."

How much is Topgolf?

The website for the Topgolf in Canton lists weekday and weekend prices.

There is an additional charge of $5 per person for a "one-time member fee" for new players. Each bay can accommodate six players.

The prices vary according to both the time of day and day of the week, according to the site.

Friday through Sunday, prices are:

  • $43 an hour per bay from open to noon

  • $55 an hour from noon to 5 p.m.

  • $65 an hour from 5 p.m. to close

Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, prices are:

  • $40 an hour per bay from open to noon

  • $50 an hour from noon to 5 p.m.

  • $62 an hour from 5 p.m. to close

Tuesday prices are:

  • $20 an hour per bay from open to noon

  • $25 an hour from noon to 5 p.m.

  • $31 an hour from 5 p.m. to close

The business also offers an "unlimited play" option weekday mornings of $15 per person instead of per bay.

Active duty and veteran service members, first responders (police, fire and EMS), healthcare workers and teachers all receive a 10% discount at Topgolf as part of its Heroes Program.
