Massachusetts Reports Highest Daily Positive Test Rate In Months

BOSTON — Massachusetts reported 600 new coronavirus cases, Saturday, bringing the statewide total to 131,814.

The numbers represent a drop from Friday, when the state reported 753, the most cases in a single day since the spring. Still, 600 is more cases than Massachusetts reported on any day in September.

Seventeen people died because of complications relating to the virus, according to the daily report, bringing the state's total deaths to 9,292 .

The positive test rate on Oct. 2 was 2.7 percent, the highest in months. The 7-day average positive test rate was 1.1 percent, up from 0.8 percent in mid-September.

Health officials say positive test results need to stay below 5 percent for two weeks or longer and, preferably, be closer to 2 percent, for states to safely ease restrictions.

The number of people hospitalized because of the virus ticked back down after increasing in September.
