'Large and aggressive' fire severely damages Clarksville hotel

A large fire with plumes of smoke visible from Interstate 65 broke out at a Best Western hotel in Clarksville, Indiana, on Sunday morning.

Officers from the Clarksville Police Department and firefighters were dispatched to the scene in the 1400 block of Broadway Street at around 10:40 a.m.

When the crews arrived, they found a "working structure fire" in an interior room that quickly spread to the attic, then moved to other portions of the building, Clarksville Fire Department Chief Brandon Skaggs told WAVE-TV.

It was "large" and "aggressive," Skaggs said.

Firefighters from the neighboring New Albany and Jeffersonville departments assisted in extinguishing the fire.

"We would like to express our sincere gratitude to emergency personnel for their exceptional support," hotel officials said in a statement. "As a result of their efforts, all hotel guests and staff were safely evacuated."

Officials confirmed there were no injuries during the fire.

Several agencies, including the Clarksville Police Department, the Kentucky State Fire Marshal's Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, will be conducting an investigation to determine the origins of the fire, which will likely take "quite a while," Skaggs said.

Officials from Best Western said they are "cooperating with local government officials regarding the matter."
