Jordan Spieth birdied two of his first three holes to open the second round to move into the top 10.

The 29-year-old 2015 Masters champion shot a 3-under 69 in Thursday's opening round. He said getting off to a strong start Friday would be important because weather could make for tough conditions later in the afternoon.

"Trying to get off to a good start (Friday) will be important because it might blow in when we have maybe four, five holes left, and obviously, the guys later in the day may have it a little bit tougher," he said. "But some of those good rounds were actually in front of us in our wave, and you imagine that those guys are going to push it even further."

Spieth has recorded top-three finishes in five of his past nine starts at Augusta National.

His second attempt made it on the green, 12 feet from the cup. A two-put sealed the bogey for the Australian, dropping him to 6-under-par for the tournament.

Players in the field are 45-under-par on No. 8 for the tournament.

"Overall, though, the prep — I probably had some of the best prep I've had in my career so far these past few days," he said Thursday. "Obviously you've got to put it together in a tournament. Weren't quite able to make the putts and hit it as close. Overall felt really, really good."

The Texas A&M senior tied a Masters record Thursday for amateurs by shooting 4-under 32 on the first nine and finished the round with a 4-under par 68.

"I couldn't have dreamed of a better start," Bennett said. "I got out of the gates hot and then made a good one on No. 6, and from 6 on played steady golf. Hit a lot of good shots, give myself some looks, kept it under the hole. Bogey-free, that's something I love probably the most out of everything. To go around this place bogey-free is pretty cool."
