Masters Junior Pass Program gives youngest patrons a chance to see Augusta National

As the gates opened Sunday morning at Augusta National Golf Club, Matthew Mosely walked briskly with his mom to the tournament practice area.

“One, two, three,” said Mosely, counting the number of bunkers around the range. “Twelve!”

And with that, Matthew, 11-years-old, had completed the first task on the annual Junior Patron Passport guide.

The passport includes nine activities that junior patrons can complete throughout their day watching the Masters Tournament. When exiting the tournament, they are asked to show their passport at the information desk across from the practice area, where they receive a medallion for their accomplishment.

“I did it last year and it was so much fun,” Matthew said. “I’ve learned a lot about the Masters, too.”

The Junior Pass Program began in 2008, allowing an accredited patron to bring in one junior, age 8 to 16, free of charge each tournament day. According to Augusta National, the program was created to forge lasting memories in the minds of current and aspiring young golfers.

When Mosely arrived Sunday, he was greeted by an Augusta National member at the front gate, and was presented with a lanyard and commemorative pin.

“I probably wouldn’t be able to come if it wasn’t for (the junior program),” Matthew said. “I’m really thankful that the Masters lets me do this.”

The nine activities in this year’s passport include:

1. How many bunkers are on the practice range?

2. What are the four Masters Tournament Foundation events?

3. How many flags are on top of the main scoreboard?

4. How many striped umbrellas are on the clubhouse terrace?

5. Have your picture taken at Founders Circle.

6. What’s the total cost for a pimento cheese sandwich, iced tea and caramel popcorn?

7. Each caddie is assigned a number. Match your favorite player with his caddie number.

8. Which three past champions would you want to have dinner with?

9. The Hogan and Nelson Bridges cross Rae’s Creek to reach which green and which tee box?
