Math teacher from Burlington to compete on 'Jeopardy!' broadcast Thursday

Update, 9 a.m. Friday, June 16: Kiran MacCormick finished third in the episode of "Jeopardy!" broadcast Thursday, June 15.

When “Jeopardy!” announcer Johnny Gilbert says on Thursday’s show “Here are today’s contestants,” he’ll introduce one of them as a math teacher from Burlington, Vermont.

That math teacher is Kiran MacCormick, who will be shown competing Thursday on the popular TV quiz show co-hosted by Mayim Bialik. “Jeopardy!” is broadcast locally at 7 p.m. weekdays by WPTZ.

MacCormick, who has taught at Missisquoi Valley Union High School in Swanton, has a track record of success with quiz-show formats in Vermont. He helped guide Champlain Valley High School in Hinesburg to a state Scholars Bowl championship in 2022, according to the Williston Observer.

A recent competitor with Vermont ties fared well on “Jeopardy!” Jake DeArruda, who grew up in Ludlow, won three times on the game show broadcast starting in late January.

In the process, DeArruda became one of the more-controversial “Jeopardy!” contestants of late, drawing some contempt online for his intense style of play. DeArruda won about $70,000 but would dub himself on Twitter as “Vermont’s favorite least favorite Jeopardy! contestant.”
