Mathis' Alvarado voted Caller-Times High School Athlete of the Week

Mathis girls basketball player Victoria Alvarado, who was a star on both sides of the floor last week, was voted the Caller-Times High School Athlete of the Week for Jan. 17-22.

Alvarado scored 23 points against Goliad and 16 against Taft, but more importantly came up with five steals in each game and seven rebounds against the Greyhounds to help the Pirates win both games.

Alvarado received 12,387 of the 35,682 votes cast, which was 34.7% of all votes.

Students can only be named Athlete of the Week one time per season, per sport.

George West boys basketball player Steven Gonzales was second with 11,499 votes

Nominations are due each Monday by 5 p.m. and can be submitted through email at ctsports@caller.com, by messaging the Caller-Times through its Facebook page, or on Twitter @CallerSports.
