The digital realm of Y2K blockbuster The Matrix—a land of illusion as well as high-octane slow-motion shootouts—is back for an encore. Directed by co-creator Lana Wachowski, The Matrix Resurrections brings back some of the original trilogy’s beloved cast, while also introducing a host of new characters.

The Matrix Resurrections began streaming on HBO Max and playing in theaters on December 22, 2022. Here's what you need to know.

What’s The Matrix Resurrections about?

The real good news is that original Matrix stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are both returning for the sequel. “I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life, and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends,” writer-director Lana Wachowski said in 2019. This wasn’t always a foregone conclusion, given that we saw both their characters perish in 2003’s The Matrix Revolutions. But all things are possible when you’re dealing with cyberspace and lots of heady sci-fi concepts.

Joining the cast are franchise newcomers Neil Patrick Harris (Gone Girl), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (HBO’s Watchmen), and Jonathan Groff (Mindhunter). One rumor, published by Deadline and other outlets, suggests that Abdul-Mateen could be playing a young Morpheus (the character made famous by Laurence Fishburne). Jada Pinkett Smith is expected to reprise the role of Niobe.
