Matt Milano said Bills defense is ‘way ahead of the game’

Matt Milano returns to the Bills this season with a nice four-year extension and some security for the future. Additionally, Milano thinks his team’s defense has a similar feeling.

Milano is a big piece of the puzzle for Buffalo’s defense that’s returning. With him and defensive tackle Star Lotulelei, who opted out of playing in 2020 also coming back, the group is essentially just rolling it right back.

That’s a plus says the linebacker.

“Right now, we’re just way ahead of the game,” Milano said via video conference from minicamp this week. “Guys aren’t so much concerned about the playbook. They already know the playbook. It’s more about getting those small details tuned up in order to make those plays to help the team win. We’re ahead of the game. We’re rolling, especially on defense, the back seven I think has been together for four-plus years now, if not more than that.”

While a consistent lineup, it’s the others outside the back seven that Milano referenced that might make a big difference as well. If Buffalo can get a better pass rush next season with new, young additions like Greg Rousseau and Boogie Basham, plus AJ Epenesa … look out.

Still, that continuity is always going to be a comfortable thing to fall back on for Buffalo’s defense. Earlier this month during voluntary OTA workouts, Milano’s linebacking partner, Tremaine Edmunds, made similar remarks.

“Overall just being more consistent over just getting better,” Edmunds said. “I feel if I get one percent better on everything and keep doing it every single day, I’ll get the results I want.”
