Bears rookie quarterback Justin Fields has already been hard at work since being drafted by Chicago just over a week ago. He’s been hitting the training room, getting some reps in with new Bears receiver Marquise Goodwin and he’s also been putting the work in acclimating to the NFL.

Bears head coach Matt Nagy appeared on the Rich Eisen Show, where he talked about Fields’ preparation ahead of camp and what goes into determining when Fields is ready to be the starter.

Nagy said that Fields has been sending video of himself working on calling cadences, which is something Fields didn’t have to do in college.

“He’s sending us video clips of just the simplicities of calling a cadence at the line of scrimmage from his bedroom,” Nagy said, “so we can hear the cadences and what it sounds like in his voice inflection.”

Fields has also been digesting the playbook and working with quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator John DeFilippo, who’s helping him with motions and formation shifts using flashcards.

While people are eager to see Fields out there as soon as possible, Nagy doesn’t want to rush the process and let Fields develop the right way.

“We’ve got to make sure as a staff that we take it step by step and don’t rush it,” Nagy said. “If we rush it, and we take this thing too fast and he’s not ready, it’s going to be bad for the Chicago Bears and it’s going to be bad for Justin Fields. This needs to be the best decision for the Chicago Bears and Justin Fields.”

You can check out Eisen’s full interview with Nagy below, which also features discussion about Russell Wilson rumors, Aaron Rodgers and the difference between Chicago’s situation this year with Fields compared to the Kansas City Chiefs with Patrick Mahomes.
