Director Matt Reeves has revealed that filming is underway in London for The Batman, the newest adaptation of the comic book with Robert Pattinson stepping into the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Pattinson is joined by a formidable cast playing iconic characters from the Batman comics, including Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Colin Farrell as The Penguin, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Paul Dano as The Riddler and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth.

Peter Sarsgaard is also attached to the film in an as-yet-unknown role.

Reeves shared a photo on his Twitter profile, showing a slate sitting on a dark leather couch that reveals the crew were shooting scene 17 yesterday.

"#DayOne #TheBatman," wrote Reeves, tagging his director of photography Greig Fraser (who previously worked on Rogue One).

Set photos captured earlier this month in London revealed the first images of Pattinson in character as Bruce Wayne riding a motorbike. Other pictures showed police cars with the Gotham city logo and cast members dressed in police uniform.

Reeves, who has directed War for the Planet of the Apes, Let Me In and Cloverfield, signed on to direct The Batman after Ben Affleck stepped down from the role in January 2017.

Affleck was still attached to star in the film until he stepped away from the film entirely in January 2019.

The film was initially conceived as a standalone Batman film for Affleck following his performances in the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.

The Batman is slated for a June 2021 release.
