INDIANAPOLIS — Former Colts starting quarterback Matt Ryan returned to practice on Thursday, 2 1/2 weeks after suffering a Grade 2 shoulder separation in the team’s loss to the Tennessee Titans.

Ryan was benched after that game in favor of first-time quarterback Sam Ehlinger. The Colts said at the time that Ehlinger would be the starting quarterback for the rest of the season, and interim coach Jeff Saturday said in Monday’s press conference that Ehlinger would be the team’s starter this weekend against the Raiders.

But Ryan appears to be available for the first time since he suffered the injury, and it’s unclear where the 37-year-old sits on the depth chart. Ryan has been inactive the past two weeks as Ehlinger starts and veteran Nick Foles has been the backup.

Ryan, who spoke on Wednesday, offered only a hint at how his shoulder is doing, then practiced as a full participant.

“I’m getting there,” Ryan said. “Feel pretty good. I don’t talk about the injury stuff, I never have, but doing everything I can rehabbing and trying to feel as good as I can.”

The Colts initially benched Ryan in an effort to jump-start one of the worst offenses in the NFL. Unable to trust his protection, Ryan had thrown nine interceptions and lost three fumbles, and Indianapolis was averaging 16.1 points per game.

Ehlinger has two turnovers in two starts.

The Indianapolis offense hasn’t gotten the boost it needed. The Colts have scored just 9.5 points per game in Ehlinger’s starts, and Indianapolis put up just 121 yards of offense last week against New England, the worst showing for a Colts offense since 1997, the year before Peyton Manning arrived.

The Colts offense could get a boost this week, though, from the return of Jonathan Taylor.

Taylor, who reinjured his ankle against the Commanders two weeks ago and missed the Patriots game, was also a full participant in practice, a much better sign than last week.

“When (I was) going out there (last week), it was still injured,” Taylor said. “You could just tell I couldn’t play. Going out there now, I can finally get some work in and actually go play ball with the guys, go out to work. It was a great feeling.”

The Colts seem comfortable in Taylor’s status, releasing veteran Phillip Lindsay from the practice squad Thursday and signing Jake Funk, despite a knee injury that has kept Deon Jackson out of practice the first two days of the week. Lindsay had already been elevated from the practice squad three times this season, and veteran Jordan Wilkins carried the ball three times and caught four passes against New England.

Indianapolis can also turn to Zack Moss, the running back the Colts picked up from Buffalo, along with a conditional sixth-round pick, in the Nyheim Hines trade.

The Colts could also be facing depth issues at tight end. Both Mo Alie-Cox (ankle) and Jelani Woods (shoulder) have missed the first two days of the week, and that leaves Kylen Granson as the only healthy tight end on the 53-man roster, although Indianapolis has three tight ends — Darrell Daniels, Jalen Wydermyer and Nikola Kalinic — on the practice squad.

Linebacker Shaquille Leonard, who has played on a limited basis the last two games, did not practice Thursday.
