Matters of Graves Importance: Barbie Night, Veteran Suicide Prevention and Awareness this week

There are a bunch of cool events happening in Chillicothe in the next few weeks to benefit local organizations and nonprofits. These include a day for Veterans suicide awareness, a festival of chili, and a 5K to raise money for Camp Cattail and Ross County Special Olympics. Giving your support is a great way to give back to the community and have fun while doing it. Stay tuned to this column for more information. Now let’s get to this weekend.

Thursday

Tonight at 7:30 p.m., I will be in Jackson at Stockroom601 for my comedy open mic. Closing out the evening will be Karen Jaffe from Dayton. Comic spots are full so come on down and laugh.

In town, the Ashley Huffer Trio will be performing live at The Page for the first time. The show will start at 7 p.m. and end at 10 p.m.

Dickey's Barbecue Pit is hosting Name That Tune & Karaoke with DJ Roush. There will be four rounds of music and the winner will receive a $20 gift card. Karaoke will follow the game. If you are looking for more trivia you can find football-themed trivia at 6:30 p.m. Old Capitol Brewing.

Friday

For karaoke head out to Wagner’s Roadhouse for your chance on the mic with host DJ Roush.

Fifty West Brewing Company is hosting a Barbie Night at 7 p.m. Come dressed as Barbie or Ken to receive a free order of fries and a chance to win a $50 gift card from Fifty. Everyone who stops by gets their first beer half off.

Saturday

Downtown at Steiner’s Speakeasy you will find Andy Beckey who will be heading our way from Nashville with his full band from 9 p.m. to midnight.

First Capital Ruck 22 will host a Fall Food and Music Festival from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, in Yoctangee Park. The family-friendly event will feature food trucks, vendors, and free live entertainment including me and Greg Higley. First Capital Ruck 22 is a non-profit organization devoted to Veteran Suicide Prevention and Awareness.

Head to Acton Family Farms in Frankfort for Sunsets, Sunflowers, & Sangria. This free event takes place from 6 to 10 p.m. and is open to all. The event will include farm tours, hay rides, a bonfire, and opportunities to hold and pet some of the farm animals. Please bring your own beverages (only sangria will be provided) and chairs. Comedy will begin at 8 p.m., followed by a performance by Duke Leisure at 8:30 p.m. The farm will also be selling fresh-cut sunflowers, zinnias, pumpkins, mums, straw bales, and other fall décor. The farm store will be open for all your meat needs.

Tuesday

Steiner’s continues their weekly music series “Locals Only” with Danny Hines and Nikki Cutright. The tunes begin at 7 p.m. Try one of Tara’s nationally award-winning cocktails while you are there.

Looking ahead

The third annual Witch Night on the Hill…at Bell Manor will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12. LoriG Comedy and Bell Manor invite you to join them for an evening of fun featuring witch costume contests, a cash bar, food trucks, tarot readers, comedy with TikTok celebrity Luke Capasso, and more. Attendance is limited to 200 witches, and over 100 tickets have already been sold. Secure your broom spot soon! Tickets are available on Eventbrite by searching for "LoriG Comedy."
