Matters of Graves Importance: Blues band, deejay, bar crawl, comics and more on tap

I had a blast from the past happen the other day in the form of a message on social media and I casually mentioned it to my mother, The Sharon.

As soon as I said the name of this person Mom became enraged. Apparently, I had an issue with them 25-ish years ago that I completely forgot about but clearly Shar did not. Mom remembered every detail of the situation, all of the players involved, their roles, and where it took place. It was like listening to someone rattle off baseball stats.

I was impressed. I was half expecting her to whip out a file folder of notarized notes complete with photographs and voice recordings.

Just know that if we ever “beefed” and it slipped my mind my mother did not forget OR forgive you and she will wait until her last breath for karma to catch up with you. In the meantime let us catch up with the upcoming events in our area.

Tonight head downtown to the Crosskeys Tavern from 7 to 10 p.m. for Chillicothe’s newest blues band, Joey Ray and Blue Lightning or catch the Greater Goods at Steiner’s Speakeasy also at 7 p.m.

DJ Trai will be easing you into your Friday with the Weekend Wind Down on Steiner’s patio starting at 6 p.m. Stop by for a handcrafted cocktail to accompany your song requests.

Saturday gear up for some day drinking as the Downtown Chillicothe group presents the Christmas in July Bar Crawl. Steiner’s keeps the music going by welcoming local band Mulgee Run for their hybrid sound of country, rock, and bluegrass.

At Wagner’s Roadhouse, you can find the music of the Brews Brothers beginning at 9 p.m. First Presbyterian Church of Chillicothe will present a summer concert with Hillbilly Chic. The fun starts at 6 p.m. and there will be free hot dogs, ice cream sundaes, and bottles of water. Bring your own lawn chair.

On Sunday afternoon I return to Old Capitol Brewing for LoriG Comedy’s monthly open mic. The laughs begin at 4 p.m. with a full 12 comic lineup featuring closer Jon Morris. I will be your host. This is a no-cover event so join us for free laughs by some of the best comics in the region as they work out new material on the mic.

Looking ahead…The Cigar Band presents their annual “Bike Nite for Mike” on Friday, July 29 at the Dock at Water. This event has been going on for over a decade and proceeds benefit the Adena Cancer Center in memory of Mike Porter. To purchase a 50/50 Golden Ticket visit www.eventbrite.com/e/bike-nite-for-mike-tickets. The pot will start at $1000 with ticket sales adding to the final total for the drawings. The listed event contains more information.

Comedy returns to the Ross County Fair on Wednesday, Aug. 10. Join me as I host and welcome the hilarious Joe Deuce. You can hear him on Dry Bar Comedy in his special, Mixed Reviews. In addition to his Dry Bar special, Joe was crowned Funniest Comedian in Lexington by Comedy Off Broadway (Lexington, KY) and has been showcased at the Black Box Comedy Festival. He has performed in over 30 states and at more than 100 colleges.
