Matters of Graves Importance: Cameron Mitchell's one-person show this weekend at the Pour House

Last week as I was leaving Bob Evans my sixth-grade teacher, Mrs. Schumann, hugged me from behind. I turned to look and there sat Mr. Hatfield, Mrs. Neff, Mrs. Whitehouse, and my favorite lunch lady Mrs. Vance…all from Londonderry Elementary. What a pleasant surprise!

You may find this hard to believe but I was a good student and I rarely caused problems. The only thing I did to get into trouble was talk. A lot. This fact is noted on 99% of my report cards K-6th grade. Looking back I think “show and tell” in the fifth grade was really when I started performing comedy. That and the one time in first grade when I told Mrs. Whitehouse I needed to go “take a leak” and she gently reminded me that young ladies go to the restroom. Or the time Mrs. Vance assured me prunes were just giant raisins and after I bit into one I spit it across the school kitchen floor.

They knew I grew up to be a comedian (I had to break it to them that my comedy is spicy) and they said they read my column. I will now sweat every week as I email this to the editor knowing it is being graded by some of the best teachers in Ross County history. Some of the best entertainment in Ohio can also be found in Chillicothe. Here are my picks for you this weekend.

Friday night Lorig Comedy returns to Fifty West Chillicothe with Nate Washington and Ian Miller. I will be your host. The show is free thanks to Fifty. The show starts at 8 p.m. Join us downtown and see what new beers are on tap. Get there early as seating will fill up fast.

Locally, Cameron Mitchell presents his one-person show on Terrace 27 at the Pour House at Machinery Hall. Expect live music (originals and covers), comedic stories, reality TV tea, and audience participation. Tickets are available on the PH website until they sell out. The Basement Collective will perform for the first time at The Cozy at 9 p.m.

Wrap up your weekend with me and open mic comedy at Old Capitol Brewing on Sunday, June 26 at 4 p.m. Performance spots are full and our closer is Johnny Collins from Columbus. Comics are coming in from across the region to make you laugh and best of all there is no cover. Christopher Colõn will be out front on Paint Street with his amazing pizzas for your dining needs. This is our first comedy adventure at OCB.

Until next time. I hope to see you out and laughing.
