Matters of Graves Importance: Halloween Festival and the Spooktacular Drag event

Shout out to Fall for showing up right on time to enhance our weekend.

Thursday

DJ Hazel will be performing from 5 to 7:30 p.m., weather permitting, in Yoctangee Park for her Music in the Park series. The event is free and will feature music from performers who appeared on American Bandstand.

Old Capitol Brewing will host trivia night at 6:30 p.m. The theme this week is States.

Name That Tune at Dickey's Barbecue will start at 6 p.m. with DJ Rous. The tunes this week are from the '90s and a $20 gift card will be awarded to the first-place team.

Friday

The First Capital PRIDE Coalition is hosting the Spooktacular Drag Event at Scioto Township Hall. The evening will be emceed by Anonymous Uzumaki and will feature several drag performances. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the show will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased on Eventbrite. This is a BYOB event.

Jimmy B, Mark Goodman, and Nevada Hart (also known as JB3) will perform at Jerry's West from 8 to 11 p.m. You can find live music at Steiner’s Speakeasy with Sam Foster and special guest Ryan Johnson at 9 p.m. Local favorite Matt Salyers takes the taproom stage at Old Capitol Brewing at 7 p.m.

The Chillicothe Halloween Festival begins in Yoctangee Park. The celebration will feature a wide variety of vendors, food, live entertainment, inflatables, contests, and more. Sugarloaf Shakedown takes over the event at 5 p.m. Friday on the band stage. The festival will open at 11 a.m. Friday and will close at 5 p.m. Sunday.

Palefest is another three-day festival being held locally. Starting at 4 p.m., it features heavy metal music among other cool things and a tour of AJ Good’s House of Masks private studio. The studio, located at 51 E. Main St., is the home of the fest. Make sure you put this on your weekend adventure list.

Saturday

Lori Pritchard will be at The Page from 7 to 10 p.m. Ohio musician Ethan Timm will be playing soulful songs from the past as well as originals starting at 8 p.m. at Wagner's Roadhouse. If you are looking for reggae, Emotional Jammage will rock the Crosskeys Tavern at 8 p.m.

The Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List on Sept. 19. A commemoration ceremony will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park Mound City Group Visitor Center on Ohio 104. The ceremony will include several speakers, including Chief Glenna Wallace of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma and visiting dignitaries. The visitor center opens at 9 a.m. and park rangers will lead interpretive talks throughout Mound City until noon.

Looking ahead

Camp Cattail's (CC) Spooky Trails 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run is Saturday, Oct. 21. CC is located at 322 Cattail Road, Chillicothe, and entry tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite. Proceeds will benefit Camp Cattail and Ross County Special Olympics.

On Oct. 21 the Majestic Theatre is hosting a Rocking to Raise the Roof fundraiser. Proceeds from this event will help the Majestic Theatre fund its next renovation project which is to replace the deteriorating roof. Tickets are available on majesticchillicothe.net. The evening features local bands Felony4, the Wegians, and BBJ Project.
