Matters of Graves Importance: Halloween Festival, Oktoberfest highlight busy weekend

This weekend is so full of events all I can say is buckle up Chillicothe. You are going to need to put in some work. Especially on Saturday.

The Chillicothe Halloween Festival is happening all weekend in Yoctangee Park with lots of local, live entertainment. From their Facebook event…”70+ vendors & food, inflatables, live entertainment, VR pods, escape rooms, games, contests, giant pumpkin weigh off, haunted house, car show/cruise in, trunk or treat & MORE!” Entry and parking are free for festival attendees.

Seven teams competed for the title of champion during the third annual coffin races at the Chillicothe Halloween Festival in 2019. The event returns this weekend to Yoctangee Park.

First Thursday continues into fall with Drafts for Dollars at the Pour House. Hosted by First Capital Rotary, $2 will be donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters for every draft sold between 6 and 9 p.m.

Steiner's Speakeasy keeps the fun rolling with First Friday by the First Capital PRIDE Coalition. This patio party is from 7 to 11 p.m. with music by DJ Cyn Rose. This is a no cover event and Tara will be concocting one of her nationally award winning drinks for the evening. Also on Friday you can find Zac McFadden at the Cozy and Matt Salyers at Old Capitol Brewing. If you are looking for out of town laughs I will be hosting Phil Pointer and Brian Swinehart at Stockroom601 in Jackson.

Saturday is one heck of a day in Chillicothe. I am excited to again be a part of OKTOBERFEST fun presented by the Downtown Chillicothe Ohio group and held in front of the Pour House at Machinery Hall (also a major sponsor.) I will be your emcee and judge of the yodeling, steinholding, and beer chugging contests. Competition starts at 6:30 p.m. and the Fest begins at 5 p.m.

This year Chillicothe’s OKTOBERFEST is a sanctioned “Steinholding Contest Qualifying Venue'' for the 2022 Ohio Steinholding Championship Tournament. The event features German music by Route 161 Happy Wanderers and you may also enjoy traditional German fare and beer. Make sure you look for the Krownprinz tap brewed by our own Old Capitol Brewing.

2'nd Saturdaze by OJ Netter is premiering at Triple Crown from 7 p.m. to midnight. This event is 25 and up and will provide a variety of happenings including a catered dinner, professional photographer, table service, a custom drink menu, and music by the Kenny Valentine Band. Admission is $10 and ID will be required with no exceptions. To reserve a table contact Mr. Netter directly at 740-993-9271. Dress to impress or come as you are but don’t forget to throw on your dancing shoes.

Also on Saturday is the second annual Palefest hosted by AJ Good at the House of Masks located at 51 East Main Street. The private studio is home to a collection of over 3600 masks. Guests will include Sleazy P Martini of Gwar, Paleface & Co, and Jared Smalley of American Tattoo Authority. Live music and vendors will be on site. Admission is $10 with 12 and under entering for free. If you are looking to hear music in a non-festival atmosphere Mulgee Run will be at The Crosskeys Tavern.

Looking ahead…I am collaborating with Cheryl's House of Hope on Oct. 14 for a dinner/show comedy night to raise money for their community efforts. To date, Cheryl's House of Hope has helped more than 385 recovering addicts get the care and support needed to move forward in their lives. Cheryl Beverly is doing good works in Chillicothe by helping those in need. Please come out and support this show. Tickets are available on Eventbrite.

Until next time. I hope to see you out and laughing.
